Mpumalanga is an area known for its beauty and splendour. Bordering Swaziland and the Kruger National Park, the region offers numerous challenging golf courses as well as the splendid Panorama Route.
There are a number of small, picturesque country towns in the area, with welcoming country lodges ideal for self-drivers on pre- or post-safari stopovers en route to Johannesburg.
Panorama Route
This scenic route is one of the most beautiful and popular in South Africa, taking you through the Blyde River Canyon, past famous rock formations such as "God's Window",
"Bourke's Luck Potholes" and the "Three Rondavels".
Pilgrim's Rest
The charming and picturesque village of Pilgrim's Rest is known as the first economical goldfield in South Africa. Gold was discovered in the Pilgrim's Creek in 1973 and the area was soon flooded with optimistic fortune hunters. Set in a lush valley, the entire village is now a living museum with beautifully restored homes and shops.
Blyde River Canyon
The 33-kilometre-long Blyde River Canyon is the third largest canyon of its kind in the world. As well as home to spectacular animal and plant-life, the canyon boasts some of the best views in the country.
